March is always an exciting time of year here at Momentum. This is because it's when we put on our first big production of the season, our Annual Winter Gala. As we get closer and closer to this event, we often receive a number of inquiries from dancers and parents such as, “What’s the difference between this show and the Spring Gala in June?” Well, the truth is there are quite a few differences. See below to learn about these differences, and find out what you can expect at our upcoming Winter Gala.
One major difference between these two performances is that our Winter Gala is held at a different venue, the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. This venue is half the size of the Spring Gala venue (the Oates Theatre at Collegiate School). With just over 350 seats, the Cultural Arts Center is an intimate performance space, which ensures that regardless of where you’re sitting, you’ll have a great view of the stage.
Another difference is that, unlike our Spring Gala which includes all of our fall/ spring classes, our Winter Gala only features select classes. This show was specifically created to give our older and more experienced students an extra performance opportunity. It's important to remember that our fall/ spring session is 10 months long, so students are putting in a tremendous amount of work over that period of time without having a ton of opportunities to showcase their skills. This is in contrast to many other extra-curricular activities like soccer, gymnastics, basketball, etc, where students get to showcase their skills sometimes as much as a couple times per week. Most studio programs are set up in a way where majority of the season is spent developing strength, flexibility, endurance, and technique and only once that is established do dancers begin learning choreography for a performance. Our Winter Gala is a well-deserved opportunity for our more experienced students to show off all that they've been working so hard on this season.
Since only select classes participate in this production, this performance is much shorter than the Spring Gala (just over an hour long). This makes it the perfect show for family, friends, neighbors and teachers to attend. (It’s worth mentioning that comparatively, our Spring Gala shows are also very reasonably timed- usually under 2 hours.) So for those family members and friends who are always saying how much they’d love to see Suzie Q dance, here’s their chance!
Finally, another question that we get often is, “Will students be doing this same dance for the Spring Gala in June?” The answer is... not necessarily. Since the Winter Gala is much earlier in the season, you can expect to see most classes perform an excerpt of something which will be extended for the Spring Gala in June. With that said, sometimes certain classes (especially our more advanced classes) will learn an entirely different piece for the June performance.
All in all, our students have been working SO HARD for this show, and we know you'll be blown away by their performance this weekend! If you’d like to learn more about this event or purchase tickets, visit Tututix.com/MomentumDanceVA.
